TRACERS data from all instruments (as well as supporting engineering data, as applicable) will be made available to all team members as soon as practically possible. Within the team, there is no proprietary period or embargo on data. However, it should be understood that data calibration is a time consuming and ongoing process, and all team members are expected to use data responsibly.
Team members must inform instrument leads or their designees whenever they plan to use data outside the baseline data product and analysis workflow for distribution outside the team. Data from any instrument can be manipulated and presented without restriction internal to the team.
All TRACERS data can be accessed and used by any member of the team. However, data or analysis of data from only a single instrument cannot be published without permission of the instrument leader.
Data providers are obligated to provide current descriptions of all calibration issues and uncertainties, and ensure that up to date calibrations are applied to all data sets available to the team.
Team members must communicate with instrument teams to ensure that they are utilizing the most up-to-date calibrations, and appropriately considering instrumental characteristics in their interpretation of data. All team members should work in consultation and collaboration with the instrument teams to ensure the highest quality science.
For the purposes of these rules, models and model results developed and provided by TRACERS team members will be treated in the same manner as data from an instrument.
Collaboration with scientists outside of the team is encouraged. However, sharing of data or associated analysis with non-team members before public release of data is explicitly forbidden without prior approval from the PI and the relevant instrument leaders.
TRACERS publications (and presentation abstracts, as appropriate) should cite TRACERS-specific references and TRACERS data sets by DOI.
Publication and authorship of all first results papers will be coordinated within the team, under the direction of the PI. Authorship of first results papers should err on the side of inclusivity.
Formal talks at conferences, where a scientific abstract is required, are subject to the same policies as publications.
Authorship of papers or scientific abstracts using TRACERS data must be offered to the relevant instrument leaders and those they designate.
Authorship on papers or scientific abstracts should be offered to anyone who makes a substantive contribution to an analysis. Lead authors should err on the side of inclusivity if in doubt, particularly when it comes to junior team members.
All team members must explicitly approve papers and scientific abstracts on which they are listed as co-authors, before submission. If unwilling or unable to do this in a timely fashion, individuals should elect not to be listed as co-author.
Authorship may be offered to non-team members if they provide substantive contributions to a paper. However, if this involves access to non-public data or analysis, this should only occur with express prior approval of the TRACERS PI and the relevant instrument leads.
The TRACERS project will provide a mechanism to track work in progress, to provide awareness to the team and prevent duplication of work or conflicts.
